Can I drink the water in Cuenca, Ecuador?

Cuenca has twice, been recognized for having the best drinking water in Latin America.  In 2008, Cuenca stood alone in the number one position.

The survey by the International Drinking Water Council (IDWC) rated Cuenca first and Arequipa, Peru second, and state, “Cuenca’s water is better than most water supplies in Europe and North America. We suggest the city’s tap water is better, in fact, than most bottled water available locally.”  They also added “Unfortunately, very few of Ecuador’s other cities have followed Cuenca’s example, and most municipal water supplies are substandard.”

So can you drink the tap water in Cuenca? I would say definitely YES! However, as in the US, I still like to make sure that my water is as clean and pathogen free as possible.

While those of us living in Cuenca know we have good drinking tap water, drinking water is something we ingest a lot of, whether just drinking, or when cooking. To further improve your water, other techniques can be used.  There are many different types of water filtration systems and water treatments but there are two that I like to use.

Water Ozinator

Ozonated Water is one of the most wonderful substances known to mankind. The process of ozonating water can produce two results:

1) Pure drinking water free of bacteria, viruses, spores, parasites, and chemicals. Wonderful for drinking, for use in pools and even hot tubs.

2) Ozonated water can actually ‘hold’ ozone for a short period of time. With the proper use of a quality ozone generator, and if the ozone is bubbled through the water long enough, ozonated water can contain significant levels of ozone bonded to the water. This ozonated water, is beyond pure. Full of ozone and oxygen, this ozonated water is used topically as a healing and antibacterial or antifungal agent, on burns, scrapes, bruises, in dentristry, surgery, and many other applications.

Amazon has many water ozinators at some of the best prices I’ve seen:  CLICK HERE  You can purchase a water ozinator for around $150 which would be very good for treating drinking water.

If you decide to purchase a water ozinator, and it is under $400 and under 8 lbs, you will not have to pay any additional taxes for “importing” it into Ecuador.  I use Club Correos for shipping items here, but you can ship it normally if you prefer.

MMS or Master Mineral Solution

The compound, sodium chlorite, is nothing short of amazing. This compound is selective in what it will kill, leaving normal body tissue and beneficial intestinal flora completely alone – while preferentially targeting any pathogenic stressor that has a ph value less than 7 (being acidic), and is positively charged.

A drop of MMS in a large 5 liter bottle of water completely treats the water, wiping out any existing pathogens that could be harmful to the body.

This is an amazing and very inexpensive water treatment.

Sodium chlorite (MMS) has been used for decades to sterilize water and food. For example, it is used in most Japanese restaurants to wash fish before they are served as sushi and sashimi. It is also recommended for travelers to carry with them to sterilize drinking water.

You can purchase Sodium chorite (MMS) here in Cuenca:  CLICK HERE

I actually use both processes for my family and we enjoy high quality drinking water.  By the way, I’ve heard several expats say that their pets were having issues due to the water here.  Using this process for their drinking water should eliminate any issues with pathogens or parasites, the major problems that have been found by vets in their animals.

Hope this helps!
